A Place-Based Toolset
The Shorefast Toolset and Curriculum Guide will support communities across Canada and beyond as they take charge of their economies. Grounded in nearly two decades of place-based work on Fogo Island and enriched by insights from community leaders coast to coast to coast, our tools will offer frameworks, and curriculum materials that are both practical and accessible, as well as methodologies that can be applied in different contexts and places.
Outcomes
By the end of course, learners will understand how to identify, develop, and communicate the value of local economic assets through community-rooted businesses.
Your community will gain practical tools and frameworks—rooted in the Shorefast approach—to support regenerative economic development, build enterprises that serve place, and increase transparency and trust.
- Learn how to surface and activate underrecognized cultural, natural, and human assets to shape place-specific businesses.
- Gain practical guidance on starting and sustaining businesses designed to reinvest in and regenerate local communities.
- Understand and apply the Economic Nutrition framework to track where money goes and communicate the impact of community-based purchasing.
What You'll Learn
ABCDE: An Introduction
Place-based communities are rich with economic assets—skills, traditions, infrastructures, and institutions—that often go unnoticed. This section will walk users through the basics of how Shorefast views community economic development with a series of stories and activities focused on showing how to move from assets to businesses by building place-specific products and markets. Our goal is to ensure that investment in local economies contributes to the true development of the cultural and natural assets of the place.
